(Avanzado 1) Gossips, gossips!!

Why don't we do a bit of gossiping? We've just read about the things the members of Abba had to go through, the problems they had with the media.
If you really want to see the difference between the so-called tabloids and more serious newspapers, check these ones- The Sun and News of the world online editions with dramatic, big headlines and fascinating stories, and something quite the opposite but a very good newspaper, The Guardian.
This is what you have to do. Flick through a few pages or headlines of the tabloids and choose your favourite juicy gossip to send in a comment and tell your partners about it. Also, page 3 is quite famous in The Sun. You'll have to find out why (but don't get too carried away by imagination, boys)
Finally, if it's not personal, have you ever been the subject yourself of some gossip, true or not? You know neighbours make up stories, acquaintances spread rumours, especially if you come from a village. Anything you were involved in, according to the rumour mill?
That's all. We'll gossip a bit next class!

To start, I've never read before now a Britain tabloid press. After doing it, I think that this kind of press is similar to some Spanish magazines likes "Qué me dices" or "Pronto". It's supposed to newspapers have to publish serious news and, from my point of view, in The Sun, and the other link-examples, we can see the opposite. I think that in some articles journalists speak about women in a poor way: they insist in their femenine curves and their huge chest, and, I think that this is horrible! For example, you can see this idea in the article of Rachel Stevens. Finally, The Guardian is a newspaper more similar to other spanish newspapers which publish economy, crisis, ...

I’m thinking in a gossip story about me, but is difficult explain it, because a gossip is spice and interesting when you know both “main characters”. For example when you are in the school the gossips are like: “The history teacher is in love with the music teacher” or “I saw the literature teacher with a boy, and she took him by the arm” … When you are working the gossips are about your boss or your workmates: “Look! She doesn’t work well because she can’t sort out the problems with his boyfriend, he really doesn’t love her”... Now the gossips will be about our classmates… I can’t write examples!

Well, i'ts so disgusting! Page 3: We are in crisis, there are lot of people dying in Africa, and some other problems around the world. Nevermind! Look what beautiful girls we have found, aren't they incredible? Wow, Yeah! The girls are incredible, but much more incredible are those kind of articles that so many people enjoy reading. No comment! What do we expect then? Nothing can works if we invest our time in such horrible way.

On the other hand, of course I have been the protagonist of a gossip: I used to spend all my summers in my mother's village. A very small village lost in the mountains of Palencia. There, as there are in all the small villages in the world, there was a mad woman that enjoyed talking about everybody's life. Once, she said that I went there because I was pregnant and I didn't want my mother to know nothing about it. Of course it was an invented story that surely enough made her happy.

I don't understand why people love this kind of articles. I'm journalism and I hate tabloid press. Not only because there isn't any information in it; I dislike the design too!

I had read before some stories in The Sun and, in my opinion, there are silly news and too much pictures, some of them disrespectful to people who appear in them. I wouldn't like to work in newspapers like these.

On the other hand,I don't remember any gossip about me, but when I went to school, there were some gossips about other classmates, like: "X and Y are in love".

Look through The Sun headlines, they're terribly sensationalist and the content of the tabloids is tremendously sexist.
I can read 'Prince Harry rides the dragon '. Really, can Harry ride the dragon? or, is it one of his dreams?. It's the same. Fiction gets confused with reality.
About Madonna, it is not important for me to know, how often she did the love with Guy. It's irrelevant. But, I remember, that night, that I was having a drink in Mayfair, when Guy got into a bit drunk singing to samba rythm "eight months ago I don't do the love with her", I recorded the scene in my mobile and called to the Sun. The follow day, the lyric was a headline in the front page and I was sell paid, I could buy a flat in Edimburgh.
My question is, why a lot of people buy this sort of press?, perhaps people need to forget their problems... I have to say that I always have a look the Sun when I go to England, I never buy it but I always have a look.
On the other hand, on my own life I've been object of gossipy people.
Firstly, when I was a student, at the Technique School, only there were three women in all the school, and the men were very gossip about the look, clothes, ways,.. of the women.
Secondly, when I started o work, in the staff there weren't women, I was the first. That was a film¡. My worksmates were worried about my civil state, I always had to hear he same question, are you single? What bored¡
Personally I think, men are more gossip than women.

Hi everybody,

I think that each kind of press has his moment. When you go to the hairdresser for example, you don´t read Seneca or Platon, you read "light" things.Telling the truth it could be because there are only this kind of press, but you know that, and until know I haven´t seen anybody reading nuclear physics or " El Quijote" there.
On the other hand, if you want to know what really hapen in the world, you know what to read.

The page 3...Pretty girls, pretty girls and pretty girls. I think that the majority of the readers of this tabloid will be men and that is the reason about the success of this page. "No comment".

About my personal experience of some gossip, I remember some years ago while I was working as a secretary, everybody thought that I was having one affaire with the
maintenance supervisor , and as it happens in these cases, I was the last one to know about "my affaire".

I´ve read some articles from `The Sun´; why is so difficult to understand the headlines? Actually, it´s a very entertaining magazine to spend your free time. Apart from that tourists spend hours and hours reading them on holidays while they sunbathe on the sea!!!!!

I´ve just read the new about Rolling Stones and the 2012 London Olympics, in News of the World.
I don´t know what is going to happen in four years, but it´s possible that Jagger and the others will be too old to act in this event...
Last year or two years ago, I don´t remeber it, they canceled some concerts in Spain because one of them felt down from a tree, so what can we hope from they...?

Hi!

It's courious what kind of things we have to do to be able to speak English, isn't it?.

Well, after few minutes (one or two hours) flicking through these pages, it's difficult to choose my favorite juicy gossip. Perhaps, one about Sarah Palin. Have you seen the latest prank on Sarah Palin?. A pranker, as French President Nicolas Sarkozy, got her to acept an invitation to hunt baby seals. Incredible!, she could be the next vice-president of USA, so, how can she fall into this sort of trap?.

What can I say about the famous 'Page 3'?. Personally I believe that this kind of pages are specially designed for men. It's the best way to have visitors. We shouldn't forget that the most important thing is to win money, as much as posible, so is complicate to change it. In Spain we have a magazine, 'Interviu', which have relative serious articles and some pages similar to 'Page 3'.

I don't know any gossip about me, but I'm sure I've been in someone. As sombody has said, I would be the last one to know about the gossip.

Hello, I´m Vicente (from Group M, 1st Advanced). Unfortunately for me, I knew tabloids a long time ago. The reason is that I like football and tabloids dedicate a lot of lines to sports in general (for example, today with Lewis Hamilton´s Championship in F1) and football in particular. I can say that tabloids many times talk about false news or rumours in sports (specially The Mirror), so I suppose that is the same in other areas.

In spite of this, tabloids stregth is that they have more attractive websites (I´m not only talking about the incredible girls that appears in the "famous page 3"...) than serious newspapers´websites.

I agree with Gemma about everything has its moment. It´s like food for example; we need to eat vegetables, fish, meat... (metaphorically, serious newspapers); but sometimes we like to eat a great chocolate cake (tabloids) but not every day.

Hi mates!
I had a look to this tabloids and I would like to express some ideas about it.
Tabloids seem to appear as a mixture of bad taste and a poor aesthetic presentation with no really interesting news, but why not ? morbous!!!.

On the one hand this means a neccessity of Contemporary Society pushing-up us to project desire and frustration by - apparently -mechanic acts.
We try to experiment Other people life experiences that we ´ve visually readed before in this pictures about celebrities way of life.
We show insecurity
On the other hand How can we protect ourselves from this phycothic mecanism?
How to become selfconfident and continue being poor, and a good worker or just a normalised individual with its own choice cap-ability?.
Dreaming ...is for free

Global culture proposes consumerism of products in this form of news.it is possible to consum everything,in such a way, we consum people through images...
I made a selection from tabloids that would be funny to comment but I ´ll just mention by now.
BLACK PEARLS
SELECTED FROM THE SUN:
- Amy Winehouse. druggie singer, she comes from a decent jewish family,...talented but stupid.
........
-Miss Morality Leona Lewis- She doesn´t drink, she doesn´t smoke
and whatdoes she do? - She comes clean!.
........
- Church girl is a porn star. "She gaves joy to old people". - Life in America is better... She uses to go to church on Sundays..-- I´ve a family that offers me unconditional love!.
........
- Madonna break - up from Guy Ritchie and accused him of being "emotionally retarded".
........
SELECTED FROM NEWS OF THE WORLD:
- BBC excess scoop.
........
- Paris Hilton : "Men used me for sex ". /Poor girl/
.......
- Ok cannabis seeds but it´s illegal to grow your own cannabis,
... BUT, You can buy seeds and planting kit online./it is legal isn´t it?/
.......
-Roonie Wood (Stones) divorce - He offered L 3 million- a -year divorce deal.
.......

...it will be continued!

Hi mates!
To be honest, I haven´t been able to choose any favourite juicy gossip. Perhaps it could be because I´m not interested in them.
I think these tabloids (with flashy headlines and "aggresive" and big photos)are similar to some magazines like "Qué me dices", "Sorpresa",etc.
If you browse through sport section, you´ll see that all the main characters are men. Where are women? On page 3, of course! Pretty and operated girls (sorry boys...)
In short: gossips of politicians and fashionable people, sports of men and attractive women to sell more.
On the other hand I´ve enjoyed reading "The Guardian" and the pictures and photos seem really good (specially landscapes´photos).
What about gossips in my life? Well, I remember some gossips of my childhood: we organiced "little weddings" when we were about 6 or 8years old at the break of class:
-You fall in love with David, so you´re going to marry him.
-Oh no! I really hate him!
I hated these gossips so I used to be the "priest" to marry another classmates.
See you!

Firstly, I hate this type of press, tabloid press, and specially page 3... and this type of gossips programs like "Where are heart?"...
I´ve read some of your comments and I totaly agree with Naiara, and I´m worried about our situation... The mass media gain control of a lot of people. Because in this country the mayority of men are crazy about football match, and a lot of people love gossips like Fulanita has an affair with Minganita... And when we have serious problems like the price of petrol are increasing out of control... we only think about "la Duquesa de Alba".... because TV news only speaks about footbal, and on Friday or Saturday we can "only" see gossips programs... I think that this situation is our fault, we could turn off the TV but really we like see this!!

Secondly, about my village gossips, when I was about eight years old, we spent the summer playing all day with about fifteen friends and we did a play..., and my bestfriend said that her aunt (single woman in her sixties) said to her parents and neighbours that we are lesbian, fifteen young girls!!!!

gossips...gossips
WHO IS AFRAID OF SENSATIONALISM?
It is not neccessary going so far to feel what happens around us...
After we have a feeling we can think about it , not before; but if we we feel things in such a way that it becomes painful... it is better to forget! not to look at them!.
So, I would be worried about starving in world, or peoples dying by Aids but what can I do?

I´ve got a friend who is got in a nervous breakdown because collective suicide of animals and I had the occassion to be supportive with him , and that´s what I can do...
ACTION!
On the other hand I think that is your own responsability to be healthy and to take care of yourself...

We live into a normalized anesthesia that protect us from pain and hurt, extremous violence or just anger.
NOT REACTION!
Alcohol, pills, music and social contacts, etc, help us to suvive...

Do you remember that happy world uthopia?

And what about human curiosity which is the start of gossiping?not journalists or writters, researchers, police or informators would be possible without that.

The litlle /big difference is... how to use knowledge? ...
and what for?
...................................

I ´ve read the Guardian and I liked a lot. It would be very long to speak about this interesting ideas that I´ve read .

my choice:

1 - A very beautiful selection of works golden icons and sacred figures from the past: angels, warriors , and some about roman violence etc ... the outsided faces of the east by critic j. jones at Royal Academy

2 - An article about female fashion shoes,
high heels/stilettos/eight inch spike/ which relates masochism and vanity, misogyny and beauty, sexual satisfaction fo men - women and rethorics of pain in contemporary womanhood context.
Many things that I knew before but ordered in a sense of questioning women behavior in contemporary society.
Brilliant!
...................................
*Modern use of shoes becomes equivalent to mid victorian period rib cage corsets deformation in womem bodies or medioeval chinese women feet deformation by aesthetics , now plastic surgery is creating a new concept of "monsters".

*I think that high heels is a symbol of power , used by men in a gorgeous period Luis XIV, prostitutes gfrom rainassance and queens to express power and presence now popularized and degraded by consumerism.
...................................
a personal experience with gossip:

Some time ago ... some bad educated people wanted to know things about me.. I hate that kind of situations and all the time was avoidind to face it when I was fed up of the situation I decided to extend a rumour about me ...as I was furnished with a synthetic wig because i was bold it was a nonsense but they stop they insane interest and now i think that i was lucky because it could happen the contrary...

The New Nose of Spain's Princess Letizia!!! The Crown Princess had a breathing problem caused by a deviated septum…but she also got her chin reduced.

Gay Anger Over Spanish Queen Book!!!

Jesulín Janeiro, the “matador” of Ubrique, has a pimple on bottom!!

Ana Obregon's boyfriend in Pasarela Cibeles!!

Do you think that “X” and “Y” will get back together?

“Z” is not only a homewrecker, but a slut!!! In closing he is wrong for cheating on his wife but so is she for going along with it.

Oh my god!!! Life would be soooo boring if something extraordinary didn't happen…

Most all people like gossiping, maybe because it is a possibility of escaping routine and having new matters to talk about. Perhaps our own lives are rather boring, empty and uninteresting and that is why we want to speak about important themes like Victoria Beckam outfit. Maybe one time, “X” is going to be photographed nude in public, but I will not pity her.

Well, after flicking through the pages of “The Sun” and “News of the World”, I have chosen my favourite juicy gossip: Crisis.. what crisis? (http://www.newsoftheworld.co.uk/news/65849/Crisis-what-crisis-You-pay-pound115bn-to-bail-out-HBOS-and-this-is-how-they-say-thanks.html)

Sorry but I don't know any gossip about me
